Divorce simply put, is a mess! It’s emotional, financial and painful!
Even after the divorce is complete you can be left with lingering effects.
This is especially true when it comes to your credit. During a divorce
you often have to untangle joint assets and credit card debts. Joint debt
is still the responsibility of both parties during a divorce.
As a divorce attorney and mediator, I guide my clients all the time on
how to handle their credit upon divorce.
Here are some of my tips on how to protect and build your individual credit
after divorce:
1. Check Your Credit Report
Do this before your divorce is final! Contact the 3 credit reporting agencies,
TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. This will give you an overview of your
full credit history.
While looking at your credit report, you will see on which accounts you
are an authorized user. You can also start making a list and note which
cards you will need to remove your name from later.
2. Open New Individual Credit Card Accounts
Start building your individual credit. Open new credit card accounts in
your name. Doing this now will help you later. In some cases it will be
easier to get approved while you are still married. Building your own
credit score takes time, so start now!
3. Review Joint Accounts
Look at credit cards you acquired as a couple. Make sure the joint credit
card bills are getting paid so you don’t have any poor credit reports
against you. Discuss with your attorney/mediator taking your name off
any joint credit cards.
4. Pay Bills
Make sure your bills are getting paid. Work together with your ex-spouse
or work with your attorney/mediator to make decisions about who pays which
bills. Start creating a new budget for what your lifestyle will look like
after divorce. Paying bills and debts can be defined in your separation
agreement.
