Can I Divorce a Spouse With a Personality Disorder?

|

Yes, you can! And in many cases you should!

If you are suffering in a marriage, being ridiculed, shot down, living in a hostile environment, made to feel less than, you need to save yourself, and get a divorce!

As a psychologically trained divorce attorney and mediator, I can tell you there is very little you can do to fix a partner with a personality disorder. Although therapy should always be a first consideration, getting a partner with a personality disorder to participate is always a battle.

There are several types of personality disorders:

a.) Obsessive-compulsive;

b.) Anti-social;

c.) Borderline;

d.) Paraniod;

e.) Narcisisstic, just to name a few.

A spouse with a personality disorder can make you feel:

1.Crazy.

Do you feel like you are losing your mind?

Have your been convinced by your spouse that you are the problem? You have failed? You are worthless?

2. Like You Are Living With Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

At home you are living with one version of your spouse, and outside, in front of family and friends, you are with another version of your spouse.

3. You Are Walking on Eggshells.

You are constantly dodging your spouse’s hotspots. You eventually avoid them at all costs. You never know what verison of your spouse will come walking through the door.

4. It’s Always Your Fault.

If you ever receive an apology it is usually followed by a qualifier like “but you…” They are never wrong or to blame. It’s always your fault!

5. You’re Being Manipulated.

The truth is constantly being twisted or distorted. You are being manipulated and controlled. You are verbally assaulted and isolated from family and friends.

If you are living in a marriage where you are abused, manipulated, or controlled, there is a way out. Your spouse may say they want a happy, healthy marriage but their actions say otherwise. This is not a marriage, it’s a prison.

Breaking free will not be easy, but it is possible.

Acknowledging that a personality disorder is a third party in your marriage is the first step. The next step is to pick up your phone and call me!
