As a divorce attorney and psychologically trained mediator, I hear all
kinds of diverse divorce stories. I have decided to share some of these
stories monthly with you.
Naturally, I will change the names and some of the details to protect my
clients. The purpose of sharing these divorce stories with you is to let
you know, you are not alone. There are peaceful, rational solutions available
to you. You really can have a happily-ever-after.
Amir and Helen were married for 5 years. They had one child, age 2. He
was a commercial drone pilot and she a stay-at-home mom who had worked
as a dietician. They lived in Brooklyn in a two-bedroom co-op.
When I received a phone call from Helen, she was with her toddler at the
supermarket. She explained she could no longer stay in her marriage, but
she didn’t know what to do. She explained her husband was very verbally
abusive and wanted them to move to Turkey which was where he was from
originally. In addition, he was having multiple affairs and she was afraid
of his transmitting a disease to her. She felt if she were to move to
Turkey with him the abuse and the affairs would only get worse.
I told her it was important that she not leave the country so she could
be better protected. We discussed multiple approaches to this divorce
and I suggested she speak with a therapist on my team, and also suggested
I have a phone call with Amir to discuss mediating an amicable dissolution
of their marriage.
Helen, with the encouragement and direction of the therapist talked about
divorce with Amir and asked if he would speak with me. He surprisingly
agreed. During my phone consultation with him, he explained he was being
pressured by his family to return to Turkey to care for his mom and a
family business since his father was very ill. He explained he was very
unhappy in his marriage to Helen because of the cultural differences and
had been acting out. He was actually relieved she wanted the divorce.
I was able to work with Amir and Helen to help them dissolve their marriage
amicably in my mediation process. We made some favorable support and visitation
arrangements internationally so Amir would see his son if and when he
returned to Turkey.

My mediation process can really work even in circumstances that seem impossible.
Creative thinking coupled with strategic problem-solving and compassionate
understanding can solve many divorce problems.
