Do You Want to Divorce a Controlling Spouse?

|

During a recent phone consultation, I spoke with a woman in her late 40s who tearfully explained she had no control over her life. Her husband had multiple separate bank accounts and was cutting back on her “spending money,” which he gave her each week as an “allowance” due to the pandemic.

She further explained her husband held a high-paying position in the banking industry and had not been impacted financially by the pandemic.

It turns out her husband pays all the bills. She never sees the bills and has no idea what is spent. Her husband gives her a small monthly allowance, which he had recently cut in half.

Although they file joint tax returns, he never lets her see the details of the returns, he just puts them in front of her and says, “sign.” She has no idea what he earns or anything about their finances or assets.

He insisted she give up her successful career as a college professor 16 years ago when she gave birth to their son.

As a psychologically trained divorce attorney and mediator, I realized during the conversation that he was a controlling spouse and she had been forced to become a dependent spouse. She was going to need an attorney/mediator with a strong understanding of this type of spouse to get her the best possible outcome.

I assured her I would fight for her and I am doing so. Right now we are using a member of my team of experts, a private investigator, to track down some of the hidden assets.
