Factors to Consider When Deciding How to Get Divorced!

For over 35 years I have successfully served the NYC area as a psychologically-trained divorce attorney and mediator.

Making the painful decision to leave your marriage is the biggest and hardest decision you may ever make.

You cannot make this decision lightly.

Once you have decided to divorce, the next important decision to make is how to get divorced.

Since this is your divorce, how you divorce is your decision! So you will want to choose wisely!

Ask yourself some important questions:

  1. How much control do you want to have over your divorce?
  2. What is your dynamic with your spouse?
  3. To what degree can you and your spouse work together?
  4. Are you approaching your divorce with war or peace in mind?
  5. Does cost and time matter to you?
  6. How much are you willing to fight or does negotiation and compromise appeal to you?
  7. How important is it to put your child’s needs and family first?
  8. Are two lawyers really necessary or can one great advocate help you both make decisions?

After witnessing the pain of many spouses day after day fighting in the court system, I decided to develop a unique psychologically-infused divorce mediation process to address divorce in a more humane and civil way. My method addresses both the emotional and legal intricacies of divorce.

I say to couples, “Why fight when you can discuss, negotiate, and participate in a thoughtful and peaceful divorce process?”

Mediation offers a more amicable, less painful, less expensive approach to divorce. With my unique mediation process, everyone is a winner! There are no losers! You are in the driver’s seat.

Mediation is a negotiated process between divorcing spouses on the important issues like: finances, property division, spousal and child support, custody and visitation.

As the divorce mediator, my role is to keep you talking, on track, and to make sure negotiations are reasonable and to offer creative suggestions when you hit a roadblock.

The focus of mediation is for you to control your own divorce. Spouses have the opportunity to discuss their personal needs and priorities and to arrive together at an agreement that is fair to both of them.

Another very important and appealing aspect of the mediation process is time and cost. Most divorce mediation cases can be resolved in months instead of years, and can cost thousands instead of tens of thousands of dollars.

When spouses are considering separation or divorce, even if they are both angry and having trouble communicating, I try to introduce them to divorce mediation first because I know how effective and family friendly this path can be.

When considering divorce, don’t consider only the traditional litigation path. Take the time to educate yourself about mediation and its many magical benefits. You’ll be glad you did!

Remember, making the painful decision to leave your marriage is the biggest and hardest decision you may ever make.
