Divorce Story

|

As a divorce attorney, and psychologically-trained mediator, I hear all kinds of diverse divorce stories. I have decided to share some of these stories monthly with you.

Naturally, I will change the names and some of the details to protect my clients. The purpose of sharing these divorce stories with you is to let you know you are not alone. There are peaceful, rational solutions available to you. You really can have a happily-ever-after.

Maryanne and Al were married 23 years. They were both chiropractors, had raised 2 children, and ran two highly successful chiropractic businesses. When Maryanne called me a few months ago she was in a lot of emotional pain and I actually recommended she also speak with one of the psychologists on my team.

Maryanne told me she had finally had enough of a husband who had cheated repeatedly during their marriage. Initially she ignored his cheating because they had 2 small children; then she ignored his cheating because she was afraid to be alone; and finally, she didn’t want to disrupt their lucrative businesses.

But during the pandemic, she had given his behavior a lot of thought. She was embarrassed and confused. But she also decided she deserved better and didn’t want to live a lie anymore. Maryanne finally had enough of the cheating, and decided to speak with me about her options.

I have heard Maryanne’s story many times before. It is an ongoing dialogue that has reared its ugly head during the pandemic and has been the topic of many of my divorce consultations over the past year.

During the initial consultation we discussed the finances, property issues, spousal support and their family business.

Maryanne told me she did not want to serve Al with a summons, make a scene, drag him to court, or have the family business torn apart.

We discussed mediation, and I gave her some suggestions on how to approach the subject of divorce with Al.

After two weeks I heard back from Maryanne, and Al agreed to a discussion about mediation. We are mediating their matter now and discussions have been emotionally painful, but also productive and progressive.

I have provided guidance and solutions to some very complex business aspects of their divorce. They are moving forward, and mediation has given them the opportunity to heal and find closure while providing them both with what they are entitled to and deserve from their marriage.

If this sounds like you, please know that discussion, compassion, negotiation, and solid legal guidance can solve your divorce problems. The untapped magic of mediation can really help.
