During a recent phone consultation, I spoke with a woman in her late 30s
who tearfully explained she had no control over her life. Her husband
had multiple separate bank accounts and was cutting back on the monthly
money he gave her as an allowance. She was a stay-at-home mom of 3 and
her husband was a physician.
She further explained her name was on none of the accounts or homes they owned.
Her husband paid all the bills, which she never saw, and gave her money
monthly for other necessities.
Although they file joint tax returns, he never lets her see the details
of the returns, he just puts them in front of her and says, “sign.”
She had no idea what he earned or anything about their finances or assets.
He insisted she give up her successful career as an art instructor 12 years
ago when she gave birth to their first child.
As a psychologically trained divorce attorney and mediator, I realized
during the conversation that he was a controlling spouse and she had been
forced to become a dependent spouse. She was going to need an attorney/mediator
with a strong understanding of this type of spouse to get her the best
possible outcome.
I assured her I would help her, and I am doing so. She was able to convince
her husband to try mediation. Right now we are working on his disclosing
assets and negotiating a fair settlement. So far the mediation process
has worked well!
